Touro continually attracts a wide range of accomplished professionals who share their knowledge and insights with students. One of the many ways this occurs is through the Law Center's Distinguished Visitor Programs, which include:
Distinguished Jurist in Residence—For over a decade, this program has drawn the world's leading jurists to the Law Center, including United States Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Antonin Scalia, as well as World Court President Stephen Schwebel and Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye of the New York State Court of Appeals. The program features a public lecture, luncheons and informal meetings, classroom lectures, and a private reception for students, faculty, and invited guests.
Distinguished Public Interest Lawyer in Residence—Recognizing attorneys who have made significant contributions to society by representation of individuals or groups historically denied access to justice, this program has featured such notables as Elaine Jones, NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund director-counsel; Judith Lichtman, Women's Legal Defense Fund president; Daniel L. Greenberg, Executive Director and Attorney-in-Chief, The Legal Aid Society of New York; Janet Benshoof, Center for Reproductive Law & Policy president; David C. Leven, Prisoners' Legal Services of New York executive director; and Stephen B. Bright, Director, The Southern Center for Human Rights.
The Bruce K. Gould Book Award—This award, named for its benefactor, principal of a leading law book publisher and Touro Law Center graduate, is presented annually to the author of an outstanding publication related to the law, the legal profession, or the legal system. Recipients have included Sandra Day O'Connor for The Majesty of the Law: Reflections of a Supreme Court Justice; Alan Dershowitz, for The Genesis of Justice, Ten Stories of Biblical Injustice that Led to the Ten Commandments and Modern Law; Barry Scheck, Peter Neufeld, and Jim Dwyer, for Actual Innocence: Five Days to Execution, and Other Dispatches from the Wrongly Convicted; Anita Hill, for Speaking Truth to Power; Robert Shapiro, for The Search for Justice: A Defense Attorney's Brief on the O.J.
