Touro Law Center was established in 1980 as part of Touro College, a private, coeducational institution based in New York City. Founded under Jewish auspices by Dr. Bernard Lander, the College was chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in 1970. It is named for Judah Touro, a philanthropic leader in post-colonial America, whose commitment to academic excellence, social justice, and community service exemplifies the ideals to which the College is dedicated.

Touro College currently serves approximately 21,000 students, with undergraduate and graduate divisions (including law, medicine and business) located in the New York area, as well as programs in California and Florida and branch campuses in Berlin, Jerusalem and Moscow.

In April 1986, the Law Center was officially named the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center, in honor of Judge Fuchsberg, a distinguished litigator who served as an associate justice of the New York State Court of Appeals, the state’s highest court, from 1975 to 1983.

While Touro’s educational program is secular, the Law Center is closed on Friday evening and all day Saturday in observance of the Jewish sabbath. Also, the Law Center facility includes a cafeteria, open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., serving Glatt Kosher breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks.
