Convocation to be Held October 11, 2012 to Celebrate Appointment of Dean Patricia E. Salkin, Nationally Renowned Legal Scholar and Touro Law’s First Female Dean
July 31, 2012Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center is hosting an Academic Convocation to celebrate the installation of Dean Patricia E. Salkin on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at the Alfonse D’Amato Courthouse in Central Islip, directly across the street from the law school. The Convocation will begin at 6:00 pm, immediately followed by a reception in the Courthouse atrium. The convocation will be preceded by an Open House at Touro Law Center, offering tours of the law school building, clinical suite, Gould Law Library, William Randolph Hearst Public Advocacy Center as well as an opportunity to meet Dean Salkin.
“This is an exciting time at Touro Law,” said Deborah Post, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Faculty Development and Professor of Law. “The convocation will be a celebration. We are looking forward to the next chapter in Touro Law Center’s history with Dean Patricia Salkin at the helm, while reflecting on the great achievements of our past deans.”
Patricia Salkin was named Touro Law Center’s dean after a national search to replace Dean Lawrence Raful who stepped down to join the faculty full time after serving as dean for eight years. Salkin is the fifth dean appointed at Touro Law, and is the first female dean in the school’s history. She is a nationally renowned legal scholar. Salkin began her tenure as dean on July 30, 2012.
Salkin is the author of numerous casebooks, treatises, books and more than 100 articles, columns, studies and reports on topics including municipal law, sustainable development law, climate change, affordable housing, and aging law. Dean Salkin is an accomplished administrator, scholar and teacher. She holds many leadership appointments in the legal profession. A member of the American Bar Association’s House of Delegates, Dean Salkin holds and has held many leadership positions within both the ABA and the New York State Bar Association including Past Chair of the ABA State and Local Government Section and current member of the Standing Committee on Governmental Affairs (ABA); Past Chair of the NYSBA Municipal Law Section and Founding Member and Past Chair of the NYSBA Committee on Attorneys in Public Service; and she has chaired numerous NYSBA task forces including one focusing on: government ethics, eminent domain, and town and village justice courts. She also served as chair of the State and Local Government Law Section for the American Association of Law Schools. An elected member of the American Law Institute, Salkin currently serves as an Advisor for the drafting of the Principles on the Law of Government Ethics. Salkin is the long-time chair of the amicus curiae committee for the American Planning Association, and she serves on the Editorial Advisory Board of the Urban Lawyer.
Salkin has served on the transition teams for attorneys general-elect Eric Schneiderman, Andrew Cuomo and Eliot Spitzer, and for then governor-elect Eliot Spitzer. Governor Paterson appointed her as a member of the University Council for Empire State College and she has also served on the Council for the University at Albany. In addition to consulting work for various state agencies in New York, Salkin has also worked with the National Park Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the National Academy for Public Administration and the National Governor’s Association.
She is the recipient of numerous honors and awards from the ABA, the New York State Bar, the Capital District Women’s Bar and many other organizations. Salkin has been at Albany Law School for twenty-two years, and previously worked for the State of New York. Since accepting the position of Dean of Touro Law she has been named to the New York City Bar Task Force on New Lawyers in a Changing Profession.
