Judge Sol Wachtler Named Distinguished Adjunct Professor
July 26, 2012Dean Lawrence Raful is pleased to announce that Judge Sol Wachtler has been named the Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Constitutional Law and the First Amendment.
“Judge Wachtler has made significant contributions to Touro Law,” said Dean Raful. “He has had a positive impact on our students, our curriculum and our community. We are proud he is part of the Touro Law family and I am glad to be able to honor him in this way.”
Judge Wachtler joined Touro Law in 1996. He is an outstanding teacher in the First Amendment Seminar, he is a distinguished member of the Board of Governors and is dedicated to student success. He has collaborated on several international CLE programs and played an integral role in revising the law school’s curriculum to infuse more hands-on learning opportunities and take advantage of the synergies of both the State and Federal Courthouses located across the street when the law school moved to Central Islip in 2007.
Sol Wachtler began his government career in 1963, when he was elected supervisor of the Town of North Hempstead. He was appointed to the New York State Supreme Court in 1968 and elected to the New York State Court of Appeals in 1972. In 1985, he was appointed Chief Judge of the State of New York and the Court of Appeals, positions in which he served until 1993.
