Touro Law Welcomes Diverse New Class with a Gift from the New Dean
August 14, 2012This week Touro Law welcomes an entering class of 256 students for a week-long Orientation that begins their journey in legal education. The entering class consists of full-time students who will complete their studies in three years and part-time day and evening students in both the four and five year programs.
“It’s an exciting time at Touro Law,” said new Dean Patricia Salkin. “This is an outstanding group of men and women who are ready and eager to begin their transformational journey through law school. I feel a special bond with this class since I am beginning Touro Law with them,” she added.
The incoming class is diverse. It consists of 46% women and 35.3% students of color. Students come from 102 different undergraduate institutions, hold graduate degrees in 17 different disciplines (includes Masters and PhDs), were born in 27 different countries and are fluent in 25 different languages. The youngest member of the class is 21 and the oldest is 55. The average student age is 25.5 years.
In her welcoming remarks, Dean Salkin told the students, “You are the future lawyers in our global economy. You will be the stewards of tomorrow – we need you to protect human rights, civil rights and to ensure that all people are treated justly and fairly – regardless of what they look like, where they came from and how much money they have. My expectations for you are high, but I have confidence in you. I know you can and will do this, each in your own way.”
As a special gift, Dean Salkin offered each student a free one year membership in the New York State Bar Association. She encouraged the students to take advantage of this opportunity where they can find mentors, access to information that can help them throughout law school, and gain access to a network of lawyers who may be able to help you find your next job.
First-Year Orientation is a week-long program designed to help the students prepare for the rigors of law school and to spend time getting to know their classmates. The program includes sample classes, seminars on topics including professionalism and justice, social and professional networking as well as introductions to the library, career services and more. First day of classes at Touro Law is Monday, August 20, 2012, when the new 1Ls join Touro Law’s returning students for what promises to be an exciting year.
