Newly Appointed Dean Patricia Salkin and Her Husband Fund New Fellowship in Honor of Her Immediate Predecessor Dean Lawrence Raful
September 5, 2012Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center is pleased to announce newly appointed Dean Patricia Salkin and her husband Howard Gross have made a donation in honor of the contributions made to Touro Law, legal education and the local community by her immediate predecessor Dean Lawrence Raful. The gift will fund a Lawrence Raful Public Interest Summer Law Fellowship for the next three years.
“We are tremendously excited by this generous gift. It helps to expand our existing Fellowship program which has become increasingly important to our students and the vulnerable clients they serve,” said Thomas Maligno, Director of Public Service and Executive Director of the Public Advocacy Center at Touro Law.
The inaugural Raful Fellowship will be awarded to one student this spring for the summer semester. The candidate will be chosen by a committee of faculty, administrators and students based on pre-determined requirements including completion of two semesters of law school, a commitment to public interest law and financial need.
Dean Salkin stated, “My husband and I wanted to make this the first gift of my new tenure because of our deep respect for Larry Raful and the things he has accomplished at Touro Law. The idea of the Public Interest Fellowship in his name is so consistent with his values that we thought it was the perfect match and we are happy to honor him in a way that would be meaningful to him.”
Each year, Touro Law awards public interest fellowships to students who share a commitment to public interest law and wish to work in the public interest legal employment during the summer. Currently, the law school offers 16 named fellowships to students. In addition, several others are offered through fundraising efforts each year.
