Associate Dean for Research & Scholarship Announced at Touro Law
Fabio Arcila Jr., Professor of Law, Appointed to Position
November 15, 2012Touro Law announced that Fabio Arcila Jr. has been appointed as Associate Dean for Research & Scholarship.
“Professor Arcila has demonstrated a distinguished record of scholarship and service to the Law Center. His creativity and passion combined with his commitment to his colleagues and to the institution in regard to fostering a more supportive environment for faculty scholarship will serve us well,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. Professor Arcila noted that he was “excited about the opportunity. A professor’s job is to share knowledge. Teaching is the most visible means of doing so, but research and scholarship are vital components to that mission, particularly to increasing knowledge through the development and debate of ideas. Importantly, those efforts improve teaching quality.”
Professor Arcila will work to increase the quality, visibility, diversity, and quantity of scholarship produced by Touro Law’s faculty, while ensuring an environment that values research and the production of scholarship. He will create opportunities to work collaboratively with the faculty, identify opportunities for working outside of the immediate Touro community, and generate greater public awareness of the Touro Law faculty’s scholarship.
Professor Arcila joined the Touro faculty in 2004. Students voted him "Professor of the Year" for 2006-2007. He was on leave as a Visiting Professor at Brooklyn Law School during 2011-2012, and as a Visiting Associate Professor at Fordham University Law School during 2008-2009.
To date, his scholarship has focused upon Fourth Amendment search and seizure law, with a general emphasis upon civil searches. Among other publications, he has an article forthcoming in the North Carolina Law Review, which discusses the recent Supreme Court decision in United States v. Jones about warrantless GPS tracking by police, and has published articles in the William & Mary Law Review, the Boston College Law Review (winner, 2010 James Madison prize from the Society for History in the Federal Government for excellence in an article or essay that deals with any aspect of the federal government's history), the University of Pennsylvania Journal of Constitutional Law, and the Administrative Law Review.
Additionally, he has participated in United States Supreme Court litigation during the certiorari stage in several Fourth Amendment cases, and also authored an amicus brief on behalf of Fourth Amendment historians in Jones, all pro bono.
Professor Arcila serves on the planning committee for the annual Northeast People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference; is active in the Hispanic National Bar Association, New York Region; and serves on the board of directors for a national migrant health organization. He has served on the Executive Board of the AALS Section on Minority Groups and numerous of its subcommittees, as well as the planning committee for the Third National People of Color Legal Scholarship Conference.
