Funding Commitment Received from van Ameringen Foundation, Inc.

Touro Law Center is pleased to announce a substantial funding commitment from van Ameringen, Inc. in support of the law school’s Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic. The $100,000 grant will be paid in installments over two years.

“We are pleased to be the recipient of this generous grant,” said Dean Salkin. “Our clinical program is an extremely important component of our curriculum providing both valuable services to the community and hands-on legal training for our students. We are grateful for the financial support received to help maintain these programs.”

The Veterans’ and Servicemembers’ Rights Clinic was established to provide legal assistance to veterans and servicemembers and their families from when servicemembers enter active duty or are deployed through their return to civilian life. The focus is on consumer matters, including debt counseling, landlord-tenant and foreclosure matters and reemployment rights. The clinic is also charged with providing community legal education.

Touro Law offers numerous clinical and externship opportunities as well as unique curricular options including the Collaborative Court Program, a three-year curricular option for Touro Law students, incrementally merging their classroom learning with the practical work of the courts. It begins with observation and culminates with participation, utilizing the integration of theory and practice as its central educational objective. The law school’s Public Advocacy Center provides another opportunity for collaboration and real-world experience that benefits law students as well as non-profit legal services providers.

The van Ameringen Foundation is a private grant making foundation located in New York City. The Foundation was established by Arnold Louis van Ameringen in 1950 and received its assets from him during his lifetime and at his death in 1966 and from his widow, Hedwig van Ameringen, during her lifetime and at her death in 1996.
