March 4, 2013Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center is pleased to announce that Hannah Carmel, a second year student, is the recipient of the Morris E. Fischer, LLC Scholarship for the 2012-2013 academic year. This prestigious scholarship is awarded to one full-time student per semester who earns the highest mark in the Jewish Law class and who demonstrates a strong appreciation for the importance and contributions to Jewish Law.
“On behalf of the Touro Law community, I extend my congratulations to Hannah for this outstanding accomplishment,” said Dean Salkin. “Hannah is an exemplary student who has exhibited the hallmarks of academic excellence. We are so proud that she is a member of the Touro Law family as she follows in the footsteps of her father, Mark who graduated in 1985.”
Ms. Carmel was born in Plainview, NY and grew up in Thornhill, Ontario, Canada for 13 years before her family settled in Wellington, Fl. She transferred to Touro Law last year in order to follow in her father’s footsteps. Ms. Carmel plans to practice law in New York as an attorney specializing in intellectual property and more specifically art law.
She stated, “My father also attended Touro Law and was the founding president of Touro’s Israeli Law Society, which at the time was the first Jewish affiliated student organization at the law center. I am so proud to continue my father’s legacy at Touro.”
The annual scholarship was started in 2012 by Touro alumni Morris E. Fischer, Esq. ’95 as a token of his gratitude to his Jewish heritage and to Touro Law Center, which fostered a nourishing and supportive environment for him in some of the most formative years of his professional and personal life. After graduating from Touro Law, Mr. Fischer began to engage in a serious course of Jewish law study, including studying several sections of the Talmud and Mishna. Touro Law offers fellowships, scholarships and incentive awards to incoming students as well as returning students, based on academic achievements.
