Liberty & Justice Dinner Honors 13 Builders Society Members
March 7, 2013Touro Law Center honored 13 new members of its Builders Society at the annual With Liberty & Justice for All Dinner held on February 27, 2103. The annual event honors distinguished members of the Touro Law community for their service and dedication to the school.
“It was an honor to welcome these esteemed individuals to the builders society, forever securing their part of the Touro Law legacy and giving them each a formal thank you for all they have done,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. “It was an exciting evening.”
This year marked only the second class of builders society members. Each member is recognized through an engraved tribute at the school and each was given a replica of their stone at the dinner. This year’s honorees are:
Dean John Bainbridge *
Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center
John Bainbridge served as the second dean of Touro Law Center. He held the post for three years, and was at the helm when the school moved to a building in Huntington that was to be its home for 23 years. He oversaw the renovation of that building – and helped guide the school through those early days. Dean Bainbridge helped bring provisional accreditation to the developing law school. Today our most distinguished competition proudly bears his name – The Bainbridge Moot Court Competition.
Professor Ilene Barshay '87
Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center (ret.)
Ilene Barshay excelled in Touro Law while she was a student. When she returned as a member of the Legal Process faculty her hallmark became her dedication and concern for her students. She had exacting and rigorous standards when it came to the pursuit of academic excellence. She was the school’s liaison to the Theodore Roosevelt Chapter of the American Inns of Court and was chair of Touro Law Center’s Jewish Programs Committee. She has made a critical difference in the lives of many Touro Law Center graduates.
Stanley Barshay
Merck & Co., Inc. (ret.)
In 1997 Stanley Barshay retired from American Home Products Corporation after a thirty-two year career. During his tenure, he became one of American Home Products’ key executives; an important contributor to the company’s management and its success. He recently served as Executive Vice President of Merck & Co. (formerly Schering-Plough Corporation). Stan has lent his talents to Touro Law for marketing and advertising ventures and helped Touro to form an advisory board, which led to the formation of Touro Law’s Institute of Business, Law and Technology. He served on the Law Center’s Capital Campaign Committee and was instrumental in helping with the first campaign. He established a scholarship in his wife’s name.
Charles Clyne
In 1978 Charles Clyne joined the U.S. Navy and spent four years serving as a Navigator aboard a Guided Missile Destroyer. After his discharge he joined a small engineering firm as a construction inspector. It was during this time that he met Susan Dietrich. Charlie and Susan were married in 1987 and had four children. Susan Dietrich Clyne, an evening student, graduated from Touro Law Center in 1988.
Susan was a Senior Vice President in Computer Analysis working for Marsh & McLennan on the 96th floor of Tower 1 of the World Trade Center. She tragically lost her life on September 11th. Shortly after the tragedy Charlie contributed the naming gift for one of the two Computer Labs. In 2002 the Law School began to hold an annual golf outing in Susan's name, which has raised more than $330,000. Charlie and his family have become an integral part of the Touro Law family.
Alan Fuchsberg, Esq.

Alan Fuchsberg’s devotion to Touro Law goes far beyond the fact that the school bears his father’s name. He is an active member of the Board of Governors and in addition to being a member of the Law School’s Board of Governors, he is a member of the Law Center’s Foundation Board and the newly formed Touro College Board of Governors. Alan and his family have been generous supporters, honoring commitments made by their parents, and making their own financial commitments for a myriad of programs. He is focused on our Jewish heritage and our mission centered concentration on academic excellence and social justice. Touro College’s Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center has benefited greatly from his strong commitment to our past, present and future through friendship, wise counsel and devoted support.
Rosalind Fuchsberg Kaufman, Esq.

Rosalind Fuchsberg Kaufman is Senior Counsel of The Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Firm She is an accomplished trial attorney and has devoted her legal career to representing people who have been severely injured as a result of another’s fault. She serves on the boards of Legal Services of the Hudson Valley and the Public Justice Foundation and has served with distinction on the Touro Law Center’s Board of Governors of Touro College for more than ten years, and continues her parents’ legacy through her dedication and support of the school. She feels a special connection to the mission of Touro Law to prepare our graduates to be socially conscious and ethically aware attorneys and to provide them with a quality education while preparing them for the realities of the practice of law.
Arthur Goldstein, Esq.*
Goldstein Rubinton Goldstein & DiFazio, P.C.
Arthur Goldstein, a former federal prosecutor and Huntington Town Attorney who helped lead local efforts to curb drug abuse, practiced law for over 50 years. He launched his own law firm, now Goldstein, Rubinton, Goldstein & DiFazio where he practiced law in the areas of zoning law, municipal law, real estate and civil litigation. He has lectured frequently over the years on planning and zoning through the New York State Bar Association. He was an active board member of the Gurwin Center and one of the first Touro Law board members. He gave leadership to the Law Center’s Friends of the Library Program.
Honorable Leon Lazer
Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center
The Honorable Leon D. Lazer, former Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department, distinguished professor of law, and veteran of the battle of Normandy, is a distinguished member of the Touro Law Center family. Judge Lazer was admitted to the bar of the State of New York in 1948, and he is still practicing and teaching today. He simultaneously serves as a faculty member and member of the Touro Law Board of Governors. He is beloved by students, colleagues, members of the judiciary and the practicing bar. He is revered for his work with land use and zoning – and his advice is still sought by practitioners in that area of the law. In addition, he created Touro Law’s annual Supreme Court Review.
Melvin Ness
Touro College and Touro University
Melvin Ness is Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Touro College. He is responsible for financial accounting, accounts payable, payroll, budgeting, financial aid and compliance, bursar, resource development, and investment management. Prior to joining Touro College, he was a controller at TPI Enterprises, Inc. and Vice President of Finance for Tel Plus Communication, Inc., a subsidiary of TPI enterprises. He was the president of Torah Academy of Bergen County and was President/Chairman of Kingsway Jewish Center. He has a B.S. in Accounting from Brooklyn College and is a certified public accountant. Mr. Ness has been with the College’s financial department for over 15 years and was extraordinarily helpful and extremely supportive of the Law Center’s move to Central Islip.
Dean Lawrence Raful

Dean Raful became the fourth dean of Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center. He served as Dean from 2004 to 2012, and accomplished more than the monumental move. He hired new faculty, continued outreach into the community, developed the Board of Governors and created the nationally recognized William Randolph Hearst Public Advocacy Center. Now a member of the faculty, Dean Raful remains committed to the success of the law center and vested in the students and alumni.

Thomas Rosicki and his wife Cynthia are the founding principals of Rosicki, Rosicki & Associates, Attorneys at Law, a leading mortgage banking real estate law firm. Their firm has five offices throughout New York State and employs more than 350 attorneys and paralegals. Mr. Rosicki serves on the Touro Law Center Board of Governors, as Board Member and Past President of AHRC Nassau and on the business advisory board of The Rehabilitation Institute. In October 2009, Mr. and Mrs. Rosicki opened their newest venture, Sparkling PointeWinery & Vineyard located on the North Fork of Long Island, exclusively making Methode Champenoise SparklingWines. Mr. & Mrs. Rosicki are strong supporters of the Law Center and employ a significant number of the Law Center’s students and graduates.

Thomas J. Santucci is the founder and president of Gateway Investments, LLC, located in Garden City. Mr. Santucci’s experience as an investment professional spans over fifteen years, first as a Financial Advisor with Smith Barney and then as Vice President of Investments with UBS Financial Services. In these positions, he managed client assets concentrating in the areas of wealth management and retirement planning. Mr. Santucci is a proud alum of the law school’s first graduating class and a strong supporter of the school. He has a passion for community service and is an active participant in numerous civic and charitable endeavors.
Sidney Siben, Esq.*

Sidney Siben was a founder and senior partner of the Bay Shore law firm of Siben and Siben, P.C. Together with his brother, Walter, they founded the firm in 1933 and it is one of the largest law firms in Suffolk County. Mr. Siben made a career out of taking unusual or high-profile cases, handling some of Long Island’s most famous cases, both civil and criminal. He was a proud World War II veteran and was a great businessman and lawyer. He was an original member of the Law Center’s Board and created the school’s first scholarship fund - the Sidney R. and Walter Siben Scholarship.

Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center’s 185,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility is located adjacent to both a state and a federal courthouse in Central Islip, New York.
