Touro Law and Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade Sign Collaborative Agreement

Touro Law Center is pleased to announce a newly formed collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SIFT) in China, a public institute of higher learning founded in 1960 that boosts a large undergraduate population as well as its own law school. Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade Vice President Xu Xiaowei came to Touro Law on Thursday, April 25 to sign the official agreement. 

The agreement includes provisions for SIFT students to receive an LL.M. degree at Touro Law, and for SIFT students to study for one academic year at Touro Law while pursuing a law degree at SIFT.  In addition,   shorter courses of study in both Shanghai and Central Islip are being developed, as well as   joint conferences, collaborative research and faculty exchanges.

“Our partnership with Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade is robust, meaningful and exciting,” said Dean Patricia Salkin.  “SIFT students will benefit from Touro’s unique relationship with the courts and our collaborative court programs, as well as our clinical and pro bono experiences.”  Dean Salkin also explained that “Touro Law students will have unique classroom opportunities in Shanghai as a result of this new partnership.”

Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade (SIFT) is an institution of higher learning originally subordinate to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation (MFTEC). It was put under the administration of the Shanghai Municipality in 1994 and became one of the key institutions of higher learning in Shanghai.

Since 1994, SIFT has been the sole foreign-related institution of higher education in the East China Region. At present SIFT consists of 7 schools, including a School of Business, School of Languages, Law School, Finance School, School of International Studies, School of WTO Research and Education, School of Continuing Education. They have established inter-collegiate relations with universities from Great Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, Holland, France, Japan and South Korea.
