Edward A. Dauer to Teach at Touro Law in Spring Semester
June 10, 2013Dean Patricia Salkin is pleased to announce that Edward A. Dauer has been named the Inaugural Kermit A. Gitenstein Distinguished Visiting Professor of Health Law & Policy. He will begin in Spring 2014, teaching in the classroom, delivering public lectures and participating fully in the faculty and student life at Touro Law.
“Dean Dauer is a prominent scholar in the field of Health Law and we are thrilled that he is joining our faculty through this newly created position,” said Dean Salkin. “Our students will benefit greatly from both his vast knowledge in the field and his passion for teaching. I’m sure he will make great contributions to Touro Law during his time here.”
Edward A. Dauer served as Dean and Professor of Law at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, and is an active mediator and arbitrator with more than 25 years experience in the field of conflict resolution. Prior to joining the law faculty at Denver he held a number of other academic appointments, including that of Associate Professor of Law and later Deputy Dean of the Yale Law School from 1974 to 1985, when he left to assume the Deanship at Denver. Dean Dauer was the co-founder and first President of the National Center for Preventive Law, is an Elected Member of the American Law Institute, and served for over a decade as a Visiting Scholar at the Program on Health Care Negotiation and Conflict Resolution at the Harvard School of Public Health. From 1990 to 1993 Dauer chaired the Center for Public Resources working group in health care dispute resolution. His writings include two books in the special field of health care ADR. His honors include the W. Quinn Jordan Award from the National Blood Foundation, and the Sanbar Lectureship from the American College of Legal Medicine. He received an A.B. from Brown University, an LL.B. from Yale University and an M.P.H. from Harvard University.
“I am most honored to have this opportunity to work with other teachers and students within the Touro system addressing with them the challenges in health law and policy that are both intellectually engaging and socially compelling,” said Dauer.
Craig Rizzo, a partner at Bartlett McDonough & Monoghan, LLP and a member of Touro Law’s Board of Governor’s stated, “"It is with great anticipation that Touro Law now has the opportunity to advance even further into the field of Health Care with the addition to our Faculty of Visiting Professor of Health law and Policy, Edward A. Dauer. Professor Dauer will bring a unique background, which will help Touro Law expand in this ever changing and complicated field of Health Care Law."
The Kermit Gitenstein Visiting Fellow was established through a $1 million gift from the Kermit Gitenstein Foundation. The new position was created as Touro Law begins developing a curricular program in Health Law and Policy and is in the process of advancing new collaborative initiatives with New York Medical College, also a part of Touro College and University System.
Dean Edward Halperin of New York Medical College said, "Both medicine and law must balance eternal verities with adaptation to changing times. Rapid change in clinical medicine and biomedical research have created challenges and opportunities for cooperative work between New York Medical College and the Touro School of Law. Dean Dauer’s appointment will serve as a catalyst for these cooperative ventures."
