Distinguished Historian to Lecture on “Jews in Shanghai and China During the Holocaust”
Dr. Pan Guang to Deliver Lecture on February 10, 2014
January 30, 2014Dr. Pan Guang, Vice Chairman and Professor of Shanghai Center for International Studies and a leading authority on the Jews of China, will deliver a lecture at Touro Law Center titled “Jews in Shanghai and China During the Holocaust” on Monday, February 10 at 12:30 pm. The lecture is open to the public and free of charge.
“Dr. Guang is recognized internationally as a distinguished historian on the Jews in China and we are thrilled to have him to speak to our students and community,” said Touro Law Dean Patricia Salkin.
His lecture will focus on the experiences of Jews who fled from Europe to Shanghai, an open port that did not require a visa or passport, more than 75 years ago as Hitler rose to power in Nazi Germany. Dr. Guang will address a number of interesting subjects, including: How the Jews who left Europe got to Shanghai and other parts of China; what their lives were like after they arrived; and the role Jewish organizations outside of China played in providing support to the Jews of Shanghai.
This lecture is a kick-off event for a Touro Law Center conference scheduled for June 2015 on the “Jews of Shanghai,” to be held in Shanghai and sponsored by Touro Law Center and Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE). Dr. Guang’s organization, the Center of Jewish Studies Shanghai, also will sponsor the conference.
The conference will examine the role of the law and the legal system in understanding the history of the Jews in Shanghai. The conference will bring together law professors, historians, and journalists to investigate the histories of the Jews in Shanghai. In addition to the fact that Shanghai provided as a refuge for Jews leaving Europe during Hitler’s reign of terror, there are other chapters in the story of the Jews of Shanghai. Sephardic Jews came to Shanghai in the 19th century, and some prospered there. Jews left Russia in the 1920s for Northern China and came to Shanghai during the 1930s. “All of these stories are interesting and deserve broad public attention,” said Rodger Citron, Professor of Law at Touro Law Center.
Dr. Pan Guang is Vice Chairman and Professor of Shanghai Center for International Studies, Director of SCO (Shanghai Cooperation Organization) Studies Center in Shanghai, Dean of Center of Jewish Studies Shanghai (CJSS) and Vice President of Chinese Association of Middle East Studies. Among other things, he is International Council Member of Asia Society in USA, Senior Advisor of China-Eurasia Forum in USA, Committee Member of the WISE Prize for Education, founded by Qatar Foundation, and Senior Advisor on Anti-terror Affairs to Shanghai Municipality and Ministry of Public Security of PRC. He was appointed by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan as member of the High-Level Group for the UN Alliance of Civilizations in 2005, and appointed as Ambassador of the AoC in 2008.
