Touro Law Receives $48,000 from the David Berg Foundation

Touro Law Dean Patricia Salkin is pleased to announce a $48,000 grant from the David A. Berg Foundation. The grant will be used to fund twelve David Berg Public Interest Fellows this summer. 

 

"This year marks the seventh consecutive year of funding from the Berg Foundation and we are so grateful for their continued support," said Dean Patricia Salkin. "Selection as a Berg Fellow is a prestigious honor for Touro Law students who are dedicated to providing legal assistance in the community while honing their lawyering skills. The fellowships are an important thread in the fabric of our law center."

 

Students are designated as Berg Fellows through a competitive application process. Students selected for the prestigious Berg Fellowships fulfill their pro bono requirements through Touro Law’s Public Advocacy Center and receive special opportunities throughout the academic year, allowing them to participate in certain conferences and seminars, providing unique opportunities for interaction with practitioners and academics.

 

Past Berg Fellows have worked in numerous government and public interest agencies, working with prosecutors and legislative offices and in the public interest sector. They have engaged a variety of legal work including helping to take clients out of homelessness, women and children from domestic violence, stop foreclosures, ensure children get an appropriate education, help seniors and the disabled get benefits, assist immigrants, advocate on behalf of people needing health care and assist citizens fighting for civil rights.

 

The David Berg Foundation was established in New York by David Berg in 1994. He was a lawyer and real estate investor. He graduated from Harvard Law School. The David Berg Foundation fund community legal services, public interest law projects, human rights anti-Semitism issues, law schools, Museums and Jewish history projects in Israel and in the US.
