New Scholarship Created for Latin American Law Student Association Member at Touro Law
April 8, 2014Touro Law Center is pleased to announce the Luis Pagan Leadership Scholarship, has been endowed by the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association Community Service Fund. The scholarship will benefit a second year student who is from Long Island and is a member of the Latin American Law Student Association.
“I am so pleased that the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association has established this leadership scholarship at Touro Law,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. “This is an investment in Touro Law and our students as well as the future of legal services on Long Island.”
The scholarship will be made available in the 2014-2015 academic year. Touro Law Center maintains a generous scholarship program, designed to recognize and reward exceptional academic achievement and potential of both current and entering students. In the past year, Touro Law has added, through the generosity of alumni and friends, more than a dozen new endowed scholarships for current students in addition to the Law Center’s existing scholarships.
The recipient of the Luis Pagan Leadership Scholarship will also receive a summer fellowship with funding from Duffy & Duffy, a large law firm located in Uniondale, Long Island representing victims of medical malpractice: nursing home neglect and general negligence, throughout the New York metropolitan area. The fellow will be placed as a summer associate with Duffy & Duffy.
“The placement of summer fellows at law firms is an extraordinary way of providing practical experience for law students. We are very grateful to the Duffy & Duffy Law Firm for this opportunity,” said Assistant Dean of Career Services Margarett Williams.
The Long Island Hispanic Bar Association Community Service Fund (LIHBACSF) is an organization dedicated to promoting and fostering the advancement of Hispanic attorneys and the Hispanic Community on Long Island, New York. In 2013, the LIHBA and LIHBCSF decided to create this scholarship and name it in honor Luis A. Pagan. Luis A. Pagan, is a founding member of the Long Island Hispanic Bar Association and severed several terms as its President and Suffolk County Chapter President. Mr. Pagan has dedicated his career to the protection and advancement of the civil rights of the Long Island Hispanic Community. He is currently the owner of the Luis A. Pagan Law Office in Riverhead, NY, a firm that focuses on a variety of law including criminal, family/divorce and personal injury.
