Touro Law Establishes Helpline to Address Legal Issues in Wake of Pandemic

May 8, 2020Dean Elena B. Langan is pleased to announce that Touro Law has established a helpline to answer legal questions arising from the pandemic. Volunteer attorneys will provide referrals to our own clinical program and appropriate legal partners on a wide range of legal issues. The helpline will be open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm beginning on Monday, May 11. Students and attorneys will provide community members with free assistance or referrals on a myriad of issues including landlord-tenant, civil liberties, bankruptcy, employee rights, unemployment, stimulus payment, insurance and more by calling 631-761-7198 or visiting www.tourolaw.edu/tlcresponse.
“Touro Law has proven to be a valuable asset in the community during times of need,” stated Dean Elena Langan. “I am proud of the law school faculty, staff, students and alumni for working together to continue the tradition of community service and social justice coupled with academic excellence. I know we will serve as a much-needed resource for Long Islanders in need.”
Touro Law is coordinating with the non-profit community and has a leadership role in Long Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (LIVOAD). Community members will be referred to Touro’s clinical program as well as pro bono partners including the practicing bar and not for profit legal and human service organizations.
“I expect that our role will grow as we assess the situation and needs,” stated Dean Langan. “We will publicize our efforts, work with local nonprofits and organizations and post information on our web site to ensure the public is informed of the various ways we can offer them assistance.”
