Touro Law Receives $25K Grant for Covid-19 Legal Assistance Helpline

June 17, 2020

Dean Elena Langan is pleased to announce that Touro Law is the recipient of a $25K grant from the COVID-19 Long Island Philanthropic Response Fund of the Long Island Community Foundation. The grant money will be used to support the legal helpline that was established to help Long Islanders with legal issues that are the result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“We are so grateful for the support from the Long Island Community Foundation,” stated Dean Langan. “This pandemic has created a critical need for legal response in almost every area of life for Long Islanders. We are glad to be at the forefront with many non-profit partners to ensure that residents of Long Island receive the assistance they need. We are looking forward to expanding our efforts over time to accommodate the growing need. This grant will go a long way to ensure that help is being provided.”

Already in operation, Touro Law faculty, students and attorney volunteers are providing community members with assistance or referrals on a myriad of issues including landlord-tenant, civil liberties, bankruptcy, employee rights, unemployment, stimulus payment, insurance and more.

Touro Law is coordinating with the non-profit community and has a leadership role in Long Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (LIVOAD). Community members will be referred to Touro’s clinical program as well as pro bono partners including the practicing bar and not for profit legal and human service organizations. Helpline assistance and referrals are provided at no cost.
