Touro Law Students Selected as NYC Bar Association Diversity Fellows

Touro Law Center is pleased to announce that two students, Deon Anglade and Lina Maria Diaz Gonzalez, received New York City Bar Association Diversity Fellowships. Deon will be placed this summer with the General Counsel’s Office of Apple Bank and Lina with White & Williams LLP.   

“The NYC Bar Association Diversity Fellowship program is highly competitive and rigorous. Deon and Lina should be celebrated for their talents and accomplishments in being selected. I am confident they will be great ambassadors of Touro Law while gaining invaluable hands-on experience at each of their respectively impressive placements,” said Dean Elena B. Langan.

Deon Anglade is a first-year full-time student who will graduate in Spring 2024. Deon has always been interested in Corporate Law and working on structuring and negotiating deals between corporations and financial institutions. He is looking forward to the opportunity to work at Apple Bank this summer to gain exposure and experience. He stated, “I am eager to work alongside and learn from established attorneys in their respective practices to gain knowledge and experience.”  Deon aspires to work in various practice areas in his hometown of Elmont, NY. He also plans to make time to mentor students interested in learning about career opportunities in the legal field.

Lina Maria Diaz Gonzalez is also a first-year, full-time student. She hopes to gain knowledge and skills and is looking forward to the exposure that working in a law firm will provide. She states, “As a Latina woman that migrated to the U.S. at the age of four from Colombia, I have experienced my fair share of discrimination and prejudice. I have noticed a lack of representation in my community, and I want to serve as a role model for others.”  Lina is thankful to have the support of her family and friends and looks forward to working at a corporate law firm in New York City this summer.

The New York City Bar Association’s Committee on Recruitment and Retention of Lawyers has been the proud sponsor of the City Bar's Diversity Fellowship Program since 1991. Since then, more than 300 diverse and talented first-year law students from eleven New York City area law schools have been given a rare and valuable opportunity: to spend their 1L summer in a law firm, or corporate or government legal department to better prepare them for careers in the law. The goal of the program is to provide first-year law students from underrepresented populations the chance to spend a summer in one of New York’s most exciting legal environments.

The selection criteria for Program Fellows are demanding, including legal writing requirements, preparation of personal statements and interviews by a faculty-dominated screening committee and then, if selected by that committee, interviews again by a panel of attorneys and other school representatives. The interviewing panel also reviews candidate's undergraduate and law school transcripts, resume, personal statement and legal writing sample. Only those who pass this final hurdle are assigned to a participating employer.
