Touro Law Home to Lawyers Without Rights Exhibit

Touro Law is proud to announce that the highly acclaimed international exhibit, “Lawyers Without Rights: Jewish Lawyers in Germany Under the Third Reich,” sponsored by both the American Bar Association (ABA) and the German Federal Bar known as the Bundersrechtsanwaltskammer (Brak). The exhibit is on display at the Law Center through March 4, 2016 and is open to the public during regular school hours. 

“We are proud to display this exhibit and remind people of the both the role of lawyers in defending society and the historical events that happened to lawyers in the 1930s under Nazi law,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. “It is important to look back at history to remember the importance of justice and the price some paid in pursuit thereof.”

Lawyers Without Rights captures the compelling story of the fate of Jewish lawyers under the Nazi regime. During the period of the Third Reich, Jews were excluded from all areas of social life and in the system of justice a swell. As early as March 1933 a decree was issued that refused some Jewish judges, public prosecutors and lawyers access to the courts from the following day. The exhibit reflects a time in Germany when individual rights and the rule of law were utterly neglected, and underscores today the importance of the rule of law rather than rule of law and the role of lawyers in a democratic society.

The exhibit has been shown in more than 100 cities in Germany and throughout the world. The exhibit has been translated into Hebrew and was on display at the Israeli Supreme Court in Jerusalem until recently.

Samuel Levine, Professor of Law and Director of the Jewish Law Institute at Touro Law, stated, “We are honored to have the opportunity to bring this unique exhibit to the attention of the community. One of the goals of the Jewish Law Institute is to study the history of the Jewish legal experience, including the work of Jewish lawyers. As we look at the freedoms and opportunities that Jewish lawyers have experienced in the United States, we must not forget the oppression they have faced in other societies.”
