Irene Crisci Named Interim Director of the Gould Law Library

Touro Law Center has announced that Irene Crisci will serve as Interim Director of the Gould Law Library effective August 1, 2016. In her new role, Crisci will supervise the operation of the Gould Law Library and oversee the staff while supporting the educational and scholarly mission of the law school. 

“Irene Crisci has distinguished herself as an administrator, a teacher and a scholar,” said Dean Patricia Salkin. “She is a creative and thoughtful librarian who is the right person to lead our library modernization efforts at this time.” 

Crisci initially joined Touro Law on a part-time basis as a reference librarian and was quickly promoted to reference librarian and Digital Archivist and PAC & Clinic Liaison in 2010.  She became Head of Public Services in January 2013, supervising staff and maintaining written policies and procedures. She also guest lectures in first year and upper level courses for students, and has taught courses such as New York Legal Research and the LL.M. Tutorial. This year she will be teaching Advanced Legal Research.

Named for the Gould family who has a long history of involvement and support for Touro Law Center, the 40,000 square foot Gould Law Library has four floors with study rooms, carrels, and tables wired for laptop use, as well as abundant soft seating to accommodate approximately 400 users.

 

The Gould Law Library collection is designed to meet the scholarly and educational needs of the law school’s faculty and students, with: more than 462,000 volumes and microform volume equivalents (with 101,000 titles) covering domestic, foreign, and international legal topics; subscriptions to a broad spectrum of online research databases on legal and general reference topics; an extensive microform collection, including Congressional materials, New York state and federal legislative history, selected records and briefs of the United States Supreme Court and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, Law Books Recommended for Libraries, archival materials, legal periodicals, and English Reports; and its partial depository for United States and New York government documents to provide users with basic legislative and administrative materials.    

The library’s Judaica Room contains a research collection in Hebrew and English that provides valuable materials focusing on Jewish law. The Judaica Room collection supports the work of the Jewish Law Institute, courses in Jewish law, and the research needs of religious and legal scholars. The Lillie Goldstein Collection is a traveling Judaica collection that may be borrowed by law schools without similar resources wishing to offer courses in Jewish law.

Crisci, who resides in Commack, NY, commented, “I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue to ensure that our library not only remains as the premier law library in Suffolk County, but that we lead the way in law library redesign with technology and the changing practice of law.”
