Touro Law Names Acting Associate Dean for Student Services
January 17, 2017Dean Harry Ballan has announced that Visiting Professor of Law Laura Dooley will serve as Acting Associate Dean for Student Services in spring semester 2017. Professor Dooley replaces Charlotte Taylor, who headed the Student Services Office since 2010. Dean Taylor resigned in November to return to her native Chicago and join her family construction business. Professor Dooley, who is visiting at the Law Center for the 2016-17 academic year, taught Civil Dispute Resolution & Procedure and Torts in fall semester 2016, and will be teaching ALS Practicum in the spring.
Laura Gaston Dooley is a Professor of Law currently on leave from Valparaiso University School of Law in Valparaiso, Indiana. A native of Arkansas, she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Arkansas with degrees in music and English, and received her J.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Law in St. Louis, Missouri. Following law school, Professor Dooley served as a law clerk to judges in federal district and circuit courts of appeal, then was a fellow and lecturer in law at University of Chicago Law School before joining the faculty at Valparaiso. She has also served as Interim Associate Dean of Academic Affairs while a Visiting Professor at Arizona Summit Law School in Phoenix, Arizona (2012-2015).
Professor Dooley’s scholarly work has focused on procedure, both civil and criminal, and her scholarship has appeared in such journals as the New York University Law Review, Cornell Law Review and University of Illinois Law Review as well as in the national media. She is a member of the American Law Institute and serves on its Members’ Consultative Group for the Principles of the Law of Aggregate Litigation.
Professor Dooley also has been involved in the arts. She served on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Street Theatre and performed regularly with the Bach Institute at Valparaiso University and the Camerata Vocal Ensemble. She also regularly appears in theatrical productions and at community theaters.
During spring semester 2017, the Law Center will conduct a nationwide search for a permanent replacement for Dean Taylor to head the Office of Student Services, beginning with fall semester 2017. The Office of Student Services provides advice and counseling on academic performance, time and stress management and personal matters. The office also coordinates first-year orientation programs, administers all in-class exams, determines requests for disability accommodations, leaves of absence, division changes and visits to other schools. Through the Director of Student Services and Scholarship Aid, the office assists student organizations with programming and budgeting; monitors student scholarships; and coordinates additional workshops and programs.
