Touro’s Jewish Law Institute Hosts Program on Democracy, Human Rights, and the Rule of Law in Israel and the United States
October 17, 2018Touro Law Center’s Jewish Law Institute launched a new program on democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Israel and the United States, exploring several important areas of the Israeli legal system in comparative perspective.
This new initiative features Justice Elyakim Rubinstein, who served as both Attorney General of Israel and Vice President of the Israeli Supreme Court. The program will consist of a series of presentations by Justice Rubinstein, in conversation with prominent communal figures, to be held throughout the 2018-2019 academic year at various locations in the New York metropolitan area.
The program commenced with two October events in Manhattan, the first of which was hosted at the offices of Proskauer Rose, LLP law firm, where Justice Rubinstein provided personal reflections on the Camp David Accords, which he helped negotiate forty years ago. The following evening, Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun hosted a conversation between Justice Rubinstein and Judge Michael Mukasey, former Attorney General of the United States, moderated by Harry Ballan, Dean of Touro Law Center.
The next event will be held on December 12, at the Jewish Center in Manhattan, where Justice Rubinstein will be joined by acclaimed international human rights lawyer Irwin Cotler, Chair of the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights, former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and longtime Member of Parliament. Additional events will be scheduled in the spring of 2019.
