Touro Law Student Receives Scholarship from the Jewish Lawyers Association of Nassau County

December 5, 2018

Touro Law Center third year, full-time student, Sina A. Nazmiyal, was selected as the recipient of the Hon. Jed Orenstein Memorial Scholarship from the Jewish Lawyers Association of Nassau County. He was awarded the scholarship at the bar association’s annual installation dinner.

Mr. Nazmiyal applied for the scholarship based in part on his academic success and work with the immigration law clinic at Touro. His work in the clinic resulted in receiving guardianship and special immigrant juvenile status for several young teens that fled from other countries out of fear due to threats from violence and gang members.

“The work I did was very rewarding and allowed me to have a positive impact on the community around me,” stated Mr. Nazmiyal. His scholarship application also included a description of his work with Attornneed, where he helped to promote a platform that “connects lawyers and law students in order to foster relationships, give students opportunities to learn through practical experience without being committed to an in-office job during the academic semester.”

Mr. Nazmiyal, who resides in Great Neck, NY, is a member of the Jewish Lawyers Association of Nassau County and hopes to make a positive impact on Touro’s Jewish Law Students Association while contributing to the Law Center as a whole.

He stated, “This scholarship is extremely meaningful to me, but not only because it helps me financially. It afforded me an opportunity to be recognized for all that I currently stand for and what I hope to achieve as I further my education and career in law. I am honored to represent Touro Law as this year’s recipient of this esteemed scholarship and in the name of Hon. Jed Orenstein, a man who stood for all of the essential values of a respected attorney.”

Mr. Nazmiyal plans to work in either commercial real estate or the general liability field focusing on personal injury matters upon his graduation in May 2019.
