Touro Hires Michael Chen as Assistant Dean of Admissions

January 14, 2019

Dean Harry Ballan is delighted to announce the appointment of Michael Chen as Assistant Dean of Admissions.

“Michael brings experience and a commitment to serving prospective and current students as well as alumni,” stated Dean Ballan. “I am confident that his skills, dedication and leadership will greatly benefit the Touro community.”

In his role as Assistant Dean, Michael Chen will lead the law center’s Admissions team, while playing a key role in the law center’s management team. He is responsible for developing marketing strategies and tactics in order to reach enrollment goals.

Michael Chen was previously the Director of Enrollment Management at Thomas Jefferson School of Law, where he had responsibility for marketing, recruiting, admissions and scholarships. One of his key accomplishments was increasing the number of applications by 10% year-over-year without increasing marketing costs, using email marketing to targeted prospects.

Before working in law school admissions, Mr. Chen was the Director of Career Services & Professional Development at University of La Verne College of Law. At La Verne Law, he developed and taught one of the nation’s first required 1L professional development courses. In addition, he created the No Graduate Left Behind Initiative, a series of workshops, mentoring, and networking events for recent graduates. For the Admissions Office, Mr. Chen created and hosted an annual undergraduate mock trial tournament on campus as a recruiting event.

Mr. Chen is a member of the Law School Admissions Minority Network, and participates in minority pathway programs that help build a pipeline to law school for historically underrepresented students. He has recruited racially and ethnically diverse students from pipeline programs such as the Council on Legal Education Opportunity’s Pre-Law Summer Institute, the Ronald H. Brown Law School Prep Program, and the LSAC Diversity Matters events. Recently, Mr. Chen served as a panelist for LSAC’s Diversity Information Workshop, an information session for prospective law school students.

Mr. Chen is a former adjunct professor who taught courses in legal ethics and real estate transactions. He is a member of the bar in California and New York.

Michael stated, “I am honored to be part of a law school that is experiencing such momentum, especially in the areas of graduate job placement, curricular innovation, and neighborhood outreach programs.  I look forward to promoting Touro Law Center’s unique advantages and recruiting outstanding students.”
