Land Use Seminar Held at Touro Law to Provide Update on Ongoing Projects
Plans for Additional Seminars and Full-Day Conference Underway
March 6, 2019Touro Law’s Land Use Institute hosted a seminar titled, “Major Long Island Development Projects: A View from the Inside.” The program attracted more than 100 developers, government officials, as well as local attorneys interested in Long Island land use issues and ongoing projects including Belmont Park Redevelopment Project, Nassau HUB, Heartland and EPCAL.
Panelists included: Thomas Conoscenti, Vice President, Real Estate Development, Empire State Development Corp.; David Pennetta, Cushman Wakefield; Sean Sallie, Deputy Commissioner of Public Works, Nassau County; and David Wolkoff, Heartland Project. The event was moderated by Keith Brown ’94, Partner at Brown & Altman, LLP and Michael Lewyn, Professor of Law and Director of the Land Use Institute at Touro Law.
“This program brought together a panel of experts to discuss various projects that will make an impact on Long Islanders,” stated Harry Ballan, Dean and Professor of Law. “I am delighted with the work the Land Use Institute is doing and look forward to future programs and developments.”
Touro’s Institute on Land Use and Sustainable Development Law, in partnership with the planning, development and environmental communities of Long Island and the rest of metropolitan New York City, fosters greater understanding of local land use law, environmental law and public policy by providing a forum for dialogue, as well as resources, such as model laws, best practice commentaries and training and education for lawyers and the larger community.
Land use and sustainability law provides one of the most effective means for addressing some of the Island’s pressing social concerns, including housing, the retrofitting of suburbia to promote more sustainable development, climate change, natural disaster resiliency and the management of water resources.
