October 29, 2019Touro Law Center’s Land Use & Sustainable Development Law Institute will host a one-day land use conference titled, “A Comprehensive Plan for Long Island.” The full-day conference will cover topics vital to the Long Island region, including Housing, Economic Development, Recreation & Open Space, Transportation & Infrastructure, Commercial/Industrial Development, Resiliency/Preparedness, Energy and Water Resources. The Conference will feature a morning keynote address from Jonathan Ballan, Esq., Partner at Cozen O’Connor, formerly Counsel to the Empire State Development Corporation and lunchtime keynote from Pat Foye, Chairman and CEO, Metropolitan Transportation Authority.
“We are bringing together experts who are passionate about all areas of land use and dedicated to Long Island,” said Richard Eisenberg, Chair of the Board of Advisors of Touro Law’s Land use and Sustainable Development Institute. “We look forward to a full day of thoughtful presentations and discussions that will have an impact right in our own backyard.”
The conference is being hosted by Touro Law’s Institute of Land Use & Sustainable Development Law Institute (LUSD), providing a neutral forum for important and necessary discussion. More than 35 panelists who are experts in their fields will be participating in the program.
The LUSD Institute is dedicated to educating and training future and current land use and sustainable development law practitioners and decision-makers. Land use and sustainability law provides a means for addressing some of Long Island’s most pressing concerns, including climate change and natural disaster resiliency; the creation of thriving urban centers and main streets; affordable housing for seniors, workers, and others; and the management of water resources, including storm water, waste water, and drinking water. To address these and other Long Island land use issues, the LUSD Institute facilitates discussions with practitioners and experts in the field, provides training opportunities for law students, and researches land use and sustainability issues of pressing concern to Long Island. Daniel J. Baker ‘92, Partner at Certilman Balin, and Keith P. Brown ‘94, Founding Partner at Brown & Altman LLP, were recently named Vice-Chairs of the Institute.
This conference is ideal for members of the development community, practicing attorneys, municipal officials, planning staff, design professionals, as well as Town Council, ZBA and Planning Board members.
