Writing Legal Lives

March 27, 2026

On March 27, 2026, the City of University of New York's (CUNY) M.A. Program in Biography and Memoir and the Touro Law Review held a symposium on "Writing Legal Lives." The symposium was held at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan. CUNY Professor Sarah Covington organized the conference, with the assistance of Touro Law Professor Rodger Citron, Kyu Youm, a recent graduate of the Biography and Memoir program, CUNY Professor Miryam Segal, and Christine Leotta.

Brief summaries and recordings of the panel sessions are below.

Legal Rogues

The first panel, "Legal Rogues," included remarks by Kai Bird, author of a forthcoming biography of Roy Cohn and Judge Gary Stein, author of a biography of disgraced former federal judge Martin Manton, and a discussion moderated by Professor Rodger Citron. Due to technical difficulties, no recording of this session is available.

Judicial Biography and Memoir: A Global Look

The second panel, "Judicial Biography and Memoir: A Global Look," included presentations by Professor Asma Bint Shafiq and Kyu Youm, a recent graduate of the Biography and Memoir program.

The third panel, "Vision and Blindness, Law and Justice: Writing a Judge's Memoir," featured Judge David Tatel discussing Vision with Kyu Youm and Professor Julia Rodas.

Outside In: Legal Biography Through Oral History

The fourth panel. "Outside In: Legal Biography Through Oral History," examined Judge Guido Calabresi's two-volume oral history, Outside In. The session featured a discussion with Judge Calabresi and his biographer, Professor Norman Silber, and was moderated by Professor Rodger Citron.

Leal Biography as History

The fifth panel, "Legal Biography as History," included remarks by Brenda Wineapple, author of Keeping the Faith, a history of the 1925 Scopes trial, and Professor John Q. Barrett, author of a forthcoming biography of Justice Robert H. Jackson, and a discussion moderated by Professor Rodger Citron.
