Scholarly Publications

One of the goals of the Jewish Law Institute is to promote and facilitate scholarly publications that explore the relevance of the Jewish legal tradition to American law and contemporary jurisprudence.

On October 10, 2011, Professor Sanford Levinson delivered the inaugural lecture of the Jewish Law Institute’s Distinguished Lecture Series at Touro Law Center.  An article based on this lecture appeared in Volume 29 Issue 2 of the Touro Law Review, along with responses by a number of prominent scholars. 

On May 2-4, 2012, the Jewish Law Institute took a leading role in organizing the biennial Conference of Religiously Affiliated Law Schools, hosted at Touro Law Center. One of the speakers at the Conference, the Honorable Alvin K. Hellerstein, United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York, spoke about "The Influence of a Jewish Education and Jewish Values on a Jewish Judge." An article based on Judge Hellerstein's remarks appeared in Volume 29 Issue 3 of the Touro Law Review.
On September 12, 2012, the Jewish Law Institute hosted Samuel Flaks, Esq., who presented a paper on Professor Nathan Isaacs and Jewish Law. An article based on his remarks appeared in Volume 29 Issue 3 of the Touro Law Review.  
On April 10-12, 2013, the Jewish Law Institute took a leading role in organizing the annual Conference on Religious Legal Theory, hosted at Touro Law Center. Selected articles based on the conference proceedings appeared in Volume 30 Issue 1 of the Touro Law Review
On April 10, 2014, the Honorable Kermit V. Lipez, Senior Judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, delivered the Jewish Law Institute's Spring 2014 Distinguished Lecture. On March 31-April 1, 2016, Touro Law Center and the Jewish Law Institute hosted a national conference, Louis D. Brandeis: An Interdisciplinary Retrospective. Articles from the conference proceedings appeared in Volume 33 Issue 1 of the Touro Law Review.

On April 1, 2019, Touro Law Center, Touro Law Review, and the Jewish Law Institute hosted a national conference, "Jewish Law and American Law: A Comparative Study." Articles from the conference proceedings appeared in Volume 36 Issue 1 of the Touro Law Review.
On September 14, 2020, Touro Law Center, Touro Law Review, and the Jewish Law Institute hosted a virtual conference, "Jewish Law in Comparative Context." Articles from the conference proceedings appeared in Volume 36 Issue 4 of the Touro Law Review.
On October 4-5, 2021, Touro Law Center, Touro Law Review, and the Jewish Law Institute hosted a national conference, "The Life and Work of Robert M. Cover." Articles from the conference proceedings appeared in Volume 37 Issue 4 of the Touro Law Review.
On September 15-16, 2022, Touro Law Center, Touro Law Review, and the Jewish Law Institute hosted a national conference, "The Past, Present & Future of Religiously Affiliated Law Schools." Articles from the conference proceedings appeared in Volume 38 Issue 4 of the Touro Law Review.
