Rededication Ceremony at the Central Islip Cemetery

The Touro Law community hosted a rededication ceremony, commemorating the souls interred in the Central Islip State Hospital Cemetery, located adjacent to the Law Center's south parking lot at 225 Eastview Drive in Central Islip, NY.
The cemetery is the final resting place of 5,500 patients buried there over the 100 years the hospital existed, mostly forgotten in life and anonymous in death, whose graves are marked only by numbered stones. A separate portion of the cemetery, with an estimated 500 graves, was set aside and consecrated for patients of the Jewish faith.
The Law Center has partnered with the New York State Office of Mental Health to restore the cemetery and assist family members locate the graves of their loved ones.
